The Gaidt lab at the Research Institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP) has an open Master’s thesis position for a project exploring a novel innate immune pathway. Research in the Gaidt lab
The Gaidt lab is a multidisciplinary research group interested in the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, innate immunology, and virology. We combine functional genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and mouse models to study immune functions and find creative ways to exploit them for therapeutic benefit.
Our lab is at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) at the Vienna BioCenter, a vibrant life-science hub in Vienna, Austria.
The project
The antiviral protein MORC3 plays an important role in the cellular defense against invading pathogens. In this project, we investigate how MORC3 restricts viruses during infection in mouse and cell culture models.
The project will combine a range of experimental approaches, including CRISPR screening, viral infection studies, and molecular biology techniques such as flow cytometry, qPCR, and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Depending on their interests, the student will also have the opportunity to learn additional approaches, including immunohistochemistry, live-cell imaging of viral infection, and the analysis of cellular and tissue readouts following in vivo infection.
This project offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in innate immunology, virology, functional genomics, and molecular biology, while contributing to our understanding of host-pathogen interactions during viral infection.
The candidate
The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:
- Curiosity, high motivation and a strong interest in immunology and virology
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Experience in mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning)
