The Gaidt group at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) has an open Master’s Thesis position to explore a novel innate immune pathway. Research in the Gaidt lab
The Gaidt lab is a multidisciplinary research group interested in the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, innate immunology and anti-tumor immunity. We apply functional genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry and in vivo mouse models to study immune functions and find creative ways to exploit them for therapeutic benefit. Our lab is at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) at the Vienna BioCenter, a life-science hub in the vibrant city of Vienna, Austria.
The project
The antiviral protein MORC3 plays a major role in the cellular defense against invading pathogens. In this project, we will study how MORC3 is able to sense and repress DNA viruses, using Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) as a model system. We will make use of CRISPR-screening, viral infection studies, molecular biology techniques (such as Flow Cytometry, ChIP, qPCR and NGS) and bioinformatic tools.
The candidate
The ideal candidate should contribute the following qualifications:
- Curiosity, high motivation and a strong interest in immunology
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Experience in mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning)
- Experience in computational biology is beneficial but not required
