Ref2505: Research Associate (Obenauf Lab)

Our Institute

The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna pursues world-class research in basic molecular biology. It is located at the Vienna BioCenter and largely sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim. With over 250 scientists from 40 countries, the IMP is committed to scientific discovery of fundamental molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying complex biological phenomena.

Obenauf lab

The ERC-funded Obenauf lab at the IMP is recruiting a highly motivated Research Associate interested in cancer therapies and metastasis biology. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting experimental research projects and contributing to the routine management and organisation of the laboratory. They will be an integral member of a dynamic and ambitious group of scientists to support cutting-edge basic and biomedical research.

The Obenauf lab is a multidisciplinary group interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying tumor progression and immune evasion. Clinical puzzles inspire our work, and we develop and employ a wide array of molecular biology, biochemistry, and in vivo approaches with the vision and mission of guiding rational combination therapies.

Your profile

  • Training in molecular biology (e.g., Master and/or PhD).
  • Previous experience in mouse work and tissue culture is highly advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Experience with FACS (to characterise the immune compartment) and molecular cloning/functional genetics skills is desirable. Experience in cancer modeling and metastasis generation in mice is a plus.
  • Collaborative mindset and motivation to work in an international, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Team player with strong communication skills and a proactive “getting things done” mentality.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (German language skills are not required).

Your tasks

  • Support research projects: Design and carry out experiments independently or semi-independently. Analyse and interpret experimental results and provide input to subsequent experimental design. Conduct mouse experiments, assist with tissue culture maintenance, and perform routine molecular biology assays.
  • Contribute to laboratory management: Take responsibility for maintaining lab inventories, ordering and restocking supplies, organizing shared equipment and workspaces, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations of the laboratory.
  • Become an integral member of our team: Contribute to cutting-edge cancer research by collaborating with our team members. Get involved in projects, provide support, and contribute to the team spirit, all while gaining experience in a vast array of molecular techniques and approaches.

The successful candidate will be part of a stimulating research environment at the Vienna Biocenter Campus, a life-science hub in the vibrant city of Vienna, Austria, which is frequently ranked the world’s best city to live in. We provide an unparalleled training opportunity with world-class support at the group-, institute-, and campus-level and closely collaborate with an international network of scientists, clinicians, and industry. The minimum length of the position is 1 year, with the possibility of an extension. The position is available immediately to support the work of a postdoc in the lab who is on maternity leave and can be full or part-time, however we request that the candidate is available to work 5 days a week. The salary is commensurate with qualifications/experience and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Application

Applications, including a letter of motivation describing your particular interest in this position and past research experiences, a CV, and the names and contact details of referees, should be submitted online. The application deadline is June 1st, 2025, but applications are accepted until the position is filled.
