40 Years of Finding Out

On Wednesday, 5 November 2025, the IMP will mark its 40th anniversary with a one-day symposium that brings together past and present members of our community. This special event will celebrate our scientific journey, reflect on four decades of discovery, and look ahead to future frontiers. The program will feature talks by distinguished alumni from around the world and serve as a reunion for our global network.

Speakers:

  • Michael Bronstein (AITHYRA, Vienna)
  • Sara Buonomo (University of Edinburgh)
  • Meinrad Busslinger (IMP, Vienna)
  • Luisa Cochella (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore)
  • Evgeny Kvon (University of California, Irvine)
  • Ester Morreale (Crick Institute, London)
  • Kim Nasmyth (University of Oxford)
  • Donal O'Carroll (University of Edinburgh)
  • Emmanuelle Passegué (Columbia University, New York)
  • Antoine Peters (FMI Basel)
  • Giulio Superti-Furga (CeMM, Vienna)
  • Alipasha Vaziri (Rockefeller University, New York)

A highlight of the day will be the presentation of the prestigious Max Birnstiel Awards, which honour outstanding doctoral research in molecular life sciences. Established in 2019, these awards commemorate the IMP’s founding director, Max Birnstiel, and have become internationally recognized for spotlighting exceptional young scientists.

The symposium also serves as a prelude to the Vienna BioCenter PhD Program Symposium (6–7 November), which this year focuses on our alumni and coincides with the launch of the new VBC Alumni Platform. It will be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old colleagues, share insights, and celebrate four decades of scientific excellence at the IMP.
