Eileen Furlong to give Max Birnstiel Lecture

28 Feb 2020
Eileen Furlong (EMBL).

Eileen Furlong will be next in our line-up of speakers to give a Max Birnstiel Lecture - the IMP’s prime seminar series, named after the late founding director of the institute. Five to six scientists - all distinguished leaders in their fields - are invited every year to deliver one of these outstanding lectures that are open to the public and invariably draw a large audience to the IMP. Don't miss the next talk in our series:

Eileen Furlong, EMBL Heidelberg:
‘Genome regulation during developmental transitions: New views of old questions'

Wednesday, 4 March 2020, 11.00 a.m.
IMP Lecture Hall, Campus-Vienna-Biocenter 1, 1030 Vienna

We are delighted to welcome Eileen Furlong, one of the leading experts in developmental biology. Eileen studied biochemistry at University College Dublin, Ireland. After completing her PhD, she did postdoctoral research at Stanford University where she was among the first to apply genome-wide methods to the development of Drosophila. Since 2002, she is a group leader at EMBL in Heidelberg where she has been heading the Genome Biology Unit since 2009. Among other distinctions, Eileen is an elected member of the Academia Europaea and of EMBO.

Together with her team at EMBL, Eileen continues to apply state-of-the-art genomics methods to study gene expression and chromosome biology during Drosophila embryogenesis in vivo, focussing mainly on mesoderm and muscle development. Among her achievements and findings are the prediction of gene expression patterns from transcription factor binding, a cell type-specific ChIP-seq version termed BiTS-ChIP, the demonstration that enhancer-promoter contact can be stable across development, the use of combinatorial indexing to perform ATAC-seq with single cell resolution, and the use of the highly re-arranged Drosophila balancer chromosomes to study the impact of genome topology on gene expression.

Eileen Furlong was invited by IMP Senior Scientist Alexander Stark.
