Anna Obenauf elected to the Austrian Academy of Sciences
IMP Senior Group Leader Anna Obenauf has been elected as a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).
IMP Senior Group Leader Anna Obenauf has been elected as a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), for her outstanding contributions to cancer research. She was previously a member of the ÖAW Young Academy. In this year’s elections, the ÖAW welcomed 46 new members. The ÖAW is Austria’s central scientific academy. Its members are elected in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements.
Anna Obenauf’s research focuses on tumour biology and tumour immunology, in particular on how cancer evolves under therapeutic pressure and interacts with the immune system. Her work aims to better understand therapy resistance and to identify new strategies for treating metastatic cancer.
Obenauf studied molecular biology at the University of Graz and completed her PhD in molecular medicine at the Medical University of Graz. After postdoctoral research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, she established her research group at the IMP in 2016, where she has been Senior Group Leader since 2022.
The work of Obenauf and her team has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including two European Research Council (ERC) grants, the AAAS Wachtel Cancer Research Award (2022), the Swiss Bridge Award (2023), and the Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Research Award (2025). Anna Obenauf is an EMBO Member and has received support through the EMBO Young Investigator Programme (YIP). Most recently, she received the EJI Ita Askonas Prize (2025).
