Gottfried Schatz reads at the IMP

18 Jun 2015

Jeff Schatz is a man of many talents. As a biochemist, he contributed immensely to our knowledge about the function of mitochondria and the transport systems in cells. His career, which started in Austria, led him to the United States as professor at Cornell University, and to Switzerland, where he was head of the Biocenter at the University of Basel. He also served as Secretary General of the European Molecular Biology Organization EMBO for five years. After his retirement, he presided the Swiss Science and Technology Council and played an influential role in Swiss research policy.

Gottfried Schatz is the author of many books related to science and research. ‘Postdoc’, his first novel, is about the life of a young postdoc of Austro-Hungarian background who works on a new kind of drug at a New York institute. It is a story about love, friendship, and the fascination of basic research. The book has been published by Styriabooks in 2015 and to date is only available in German.

It is no coincidence that Schatz chose the IMP to introduce his book to an Austrian audience. There are special ties to this place which was the nucleus of today’s Vienna Biocenter. As head of the Scientific Search Committee, Jeff Schatz was instrumental in appointing the late Max Birnstiel as founding director, and he was a much appreciated member of the IMP’s Scientific Advisory Board for many years.

The public is cordially invited to join us for this evening with Jeff and Kamilla Schatz. The reading and music performance will last about 90 minutes, followed by an autograph session and some drinks.
