The Gaidt group at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) has an open Master’s position to explore novel innate immune pathways. We are looking for an enthusiastic student with an interest in immunology and molecular biology. If you are passionate about research and want to work on an exciting project at the intersection of innate immunity and gene regulation in a highly collaborative research environment, you may be the one we are looking for!
Research in the Gaidt lab
The Gaidt lab is a multidisciplinary research group interested in the molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions, innate immunology and anti-tumor immunity. We apply functional genomics, molecular biology, biochemistry and in vivo mouse models to study immune functions and find creative ways to exploit them for therapeutic benefit. Our lab is at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) at the Vienna BioCenter, a life-science hub in the vibrant city of Vienna, Austria.
The project
Type I Interferon plays a major role in the cellular antiviral defense. In this project, we will study the role of Interferon during infection with Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1). The project involves the identification, validation and mechanistic study of Interferon-related genes and their role during viral infection. We will make use of robotics-based CRISPR-screening, viral infection studies, molecular biology techniques (such as Flow Cytometry, qPCR and NGS) and bioinformatic tools. The student is welcome to also engage in additional, related projects.
The candidate
The ideal candidate should contribute the following qualifications:
- Curiosity, a high motivation and a strong interest in immunology
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Experience in mammalian cell culture and standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning)
Applications with a cover letter outlining your research interests, transcript of records and your CV should be sent moritz.gaidt[at]imp.ac.at. Applications are considered until the position is filled. The student will receive a monthly stipend.
