The Ernst Schering Foundation awards fellowships to young scientists who work towards their dissertation in basic research in biology, medicine or chemistry (including related interdisciplinary fields of research). The following are application requirements:

  • At the time of application, the applicant must have a university degree that qualifies him/her to pursue a doctorate.
  • The applicant graduated with excellent grades.
  • The degree must have been completed no longer than two years before the time of application.
  • The dissertation work will focus on topics in basic research in biology, medicine or organic chemistry (or any overlapping or neighboring disciplines such as biophysics and bioinformatics).
  • The applicant should not yet have started his/her research project at time of application.


Fellowships are awarded irrespective of the applicant’s nationality and the country where the project will be pursued. The dissertation project can be carried out at a university or institute of the applicant’s choice.

The fellowships are awarded for a two-year period. In exceptional cases, the fellowship can be extended for up to one year. Every year, it awards a total of approximately 7 fellowships to doctoral students who want to carry out research projects at prestigious institutes either at home or abroad.
